NHS 111

What is it?

NHS 111 is a new service and telephone number intended to make it easier for patients to access health care services when they need medical attention, but do not have a life threatening situation.  It is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Calls are free. Simply dial 111.

How does it work?

Trained call advisers, supported by nurses, will assess patients’ symptoms and put them directly in touch with the appropriate professional (e.g. general practice, an out of hours doctor, district nurse, emergency dentist, chemist etc).

NHS 111 can also send an ambulance, if required.

NHS 111 FlyerEach area will have a Directory of Services, listing local services, their access criteria, opening hours and current capacity.  Where possible, NHS 111 will book an appointment or transfer the patient directly to the service they need to speak to.
